Who was your mentor growing up?
My father. He was a source of inspiration and wise counsel. Always cool, thoughtful, and supportive.

Who was your favorite teacher and why?
That's a very tough call. Jan Whittlesey was an inspiring debate coach at Beaverton High School who erased my fear of public speaking. Teresa Brandon ran the best AP English program in Oregon for years. Her class was more demanding than anything I took in graduate school. And then there's Ed Whitelaw. He's a UO teaching legend and my long-time mentor.
