With 75 percent of Mid Valley’s 415 students living in poverty and 75 percent coming from Spanish-speaking homes, the school encountered several obstacles to involving parents. The school chose to promote a bilingual program to better serve the students, and also updated its family involvement policy to improve communication with parents. In the policy, the school agreed to translate all written materials, provide translators at meetings, and implement a phone-tree list. As an incentive to read and review the policy, Mid Valley raffled off two $25 gift certificates from returned and signed summaries.
